Meet the Doulas - Hosts & Panelists
Just 1 year ago, I would never have imagined I would be spending my days as part of the amazing pregnancy & birth community. I always knew I wanted children but was baffled by the entire process. Being around kids has always been my passion, as pursued through my education degree and experience as a middle school teacher. After moving to California, I found my voice and confidence in yoga and have been teaching Power Vinyasa for 6+ years in Orange County.
My pregnancies with both my children were magical but it was my son's birth that brought me to the practice of birth work. After having to be my own advocate in the hospital, fighting off numerous doctors pressuring me in to a c-section, I realized that every mama and family deserve to be heard and supported, ensuring they have their desired outcome for the entrance of their little one in to the world.
I am thrilled to offer my services as a birth doula and childbirth educator to the greater Orange County area. My only intention is to be of service to my fellow sisters during their journey through conception, pregnancy, birth and postpartum. I have completed DONA training for birth doula services and ICEA training for childbirth education services. I am in the process of working towards certification in both. I am trained in prenatal yoga and am a certified baby sign language instructor as well.
My personal tribe consists of my husband, Justin, and two amazing children, Jai & Luna. When not playing with my babies or practicing my craft, my garden is my sanctuary and my yoga mat is home.
After having my first son in early 2011, I instantly became obsessed with everything baby! I joined a Mommy and Me group in Los Angeles where I met 11 other amazing women whose babies were born within weeks of my son. I had no idea the positive impact this group would have on all of us nor did I ever think that the women would become some of my best friends. I didn’t know it at the time, but this group would change my life.
After my son was born, I pursued my passion in child development and became a Certified Parent Educator and a Certified Newborn/Infant Care Specialist. As he entered the “terrible two’s” I found myself drawn to the Positive Discipline curriculum and have since become a Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator through the Positive Discipline Association. I am now mom to two beautiful boys who enrich my life and have made me a better person and educator.
In early 2012, my husband was relocated to Orange County for work. The move happened suddenly which gave me the unexpected opportunity to move on to the next chapter in my life. Though I wasn’t sure what would come next, I was excited to experience the new journey. While searching for groups to join with my son during our transitional period, I researched and discovered many groups which offered activities for children, but wasn’t able to find supportive and educational groups for the moms, similar to the one I had belonged to. So it became clear what my next chapter would be. I combined my passion of bringing people together with my love of being a mom to create this program so that other moms could have the same life-changing experience that I had. And so I “gave birth” to a labor of love… The New Mom School
Panelists for our November Event
Brandy Ferner is a local childbirth education, birth doula, and mother of two. The Birthing from Within book and classes had such a profound impact on her first pregnancy that she became a certified educator with the program and has risen to an advisor role for the organization, mentoring others during their certification journey
. In addition to her prenatal and birth offerings, Brandy also trained with Pam England in Birth Story Medicine and leads workshops and private sessions to help mothers process births that didn't go as they had hoped or expected. Brandy's favorite part of birth work is the personal growth piece and she considers it an honor to walk beside parents as they take the leap into the unknown of birth and life as a parent.
When she's not working as a mentor and doula, Brandy writes for the Huffington Post online and has a fiction book in the works!
Tawnya is a Birth Doula serving Orange County. She believes women are strong and capable to make the best decisions for the birthing of their babies and should be surrounded by people that also believe in and support the decisions made during pregnancy, birth and postpartum by the Mother. Through education and unconditional support, Tawnya’s goal is to help create a positive birth experience for her client and for her to feel love and supported through her journey to Motherhood.
Her experience serving women in birth include home and hospital settings, unmedicated and medicated birth, scheduled and unscheduled cesareans. Continuing education and training is very important to Tawnya in order to best serve her clients. Her training includes: use of the rebozo, acupressure during labor, aromatherapy for pregnancy, birth and postpartum, and birthing using hypnosis.
Tawnya is married to her best friend and they have two sons together. She enjoys spending time with her family and throwing parties as a reason for friends and family to get together.
Amanda's path toward birth & body work began in 2011 with employment at a local homeless shelter for pregnant women. After attending a resident's birth, Amanda realized she wanted to make a career out of helping women and families.
While finishing her B.A. in Sociology: Families & Children, she attended dozens of births for residents of the shelter. In 2013, Amanda founded Your Birth Team and built a private practice based on community involvement and partnership. In addition to childbirth education & doula support, Your Birth Team offers in-home postpartum care, birth trauma healing sessions, yoga classes, belly binding, placenta encapsulation, & car seat inspections + installations.
Marlee and Megan Malone-Franklin are a wife-and-wife doula team serving Orange County and Long Beach. They have been working official in this capacity for two years, but both have a lifelong passion for supporting parents and families, especially through the journey of welcoming a new child.
Through this work, they have discovered that many parents-to-be are thirsty for realistic preparation for the life-changing experiences of the childbearing year. It is a privilege to share what they have learned (and are constantly learning) about birth as a rite of passage, and to support parents with compassionate mentoring through some of life's most intense transitions.
In addition to attending births, Marlee and Megan are also postpartum doulas, childbirth educators, and Birthing From Within mentors. They love watching Friends and taking walks with their spaniel.
Lauren Jacobs is a Birth & Postpartum Doula and the Administrative Director at OC Doula Collective. She has been serving the greater Los Angeles & Orange County areas since 2008 as a Doula, Educator, and Prenatal Yoga Instructor. Beginning as a Prenatal Yoga student, her mentor helped her find an incredible passion for birth work. It didn't take long for Lauren to accept that a strong force was pulling her into the world of pregnancy, childbirth and beyond. Her greatest desire as a Doula is to wholistically support women wherever they're at in in the present moment and to provide professional yet intimate care to all of her clients. The goal of Lauren's education and training is geared towards fulfilling her vision of working with women to facilitate empowerment and self-love through knowing and trusting in their own bodies. Setting judgments and agenda aside, her intuition guide her into sacred relationship with the women she serves and the bond is unbreakable... just ask any of her clients!
Residing in Orange, CA, Lauren enjoys swimming, hiking, sushi dates, knitting and voraciously reading any good fiction she can get her hands on.
Allison was born and raised in Arizona but made Southern California her home to study Intercultural Studies & Development in college. She loves to travel and through all her experiences abroad, she has grown to love the diverse cultures and people (and food!) from across the world.
Allison was first introduced to birth through families she nannied for. Eventually her family and friends around her became pregnant and she was able to be a part of the process, quickly discovering she was destined to be around birth and babies! Birth had marked her heart. Allison has been a doula in Orange County for a year now and is excited to see where this journey takes her. Apart from being a doula, Allison loves to bake, rollerblade on the Venice boardwalk, and spend time with her family – especially her three nephews!
